Forbes Center Venue Rules/Regulations
1. Everyone must wear shoes at all times. Bare Feet are not permitted on stage, backstage, in the lobbies, or hallways. This is for your safety. Please keep your sandals on during the entirety of the event.
2. Other than water, absolutely no food or drink (including gums & mints) is permitted in the venues, hallways, or in the lobbies at any time. Seal-able water bottles are permitted backstage and on stage, but you may not bring your water bottle into the audience seating area.
3. All personal belongings (to include instrument cases) must remain backstage on or under the provided tables. Please do not leave personal belongings in front of, or blocking the path to, an emergency exit door, piano storage or within any of the colored rectangles taped out on the floor. Do not leave any personal items between the red tape line and the stage entrance on either side of the stage. Furthermore at no time should personal belongings be in any of the audience areas. This is to make sure there’s a safe and clear exit path in the event of an emergency.
4. We have what we think is a beautiful building, but it is very delicate. Please help us keep it looking as good as it sounds by not touching the walls or scooting chairs/ stands across the floor. When you go into the house, please keep your feet on the floor (never on the seats, seat backs, walls, or railings). Do not sit on the edge of the stage or climb onto or off of the front of the stage. When it is appropriate for you to be in the house, please use the side walkways.
5. Cellos and Basses – Bare endpins are not permitted in The Forbes Center or any of it’s venues. If you need a rubber endpin or rock stop, please notify your JMU liaison immediately.
6. Please note the ledge at the back of the stage. It is neither a bench nor a shelf; please do not sit or stand on it or place any objects on it.
7. The piano is not a table. Please do not place anything on the piano. This includes clothing, music folders, even one sheet of paper or a pencil. This is to keep our concert grands looking as lovely as they sound. Only music is permitted to be on the music rack of the piano. Furthermore, Only the Forbes Center Production Staff is permitted to move the piano. If you need the piano to move please ask your JMU Liaison or a Production Staff member and we will be happy to move it for you.
8. It is important to control the volume of your voice at all times. If you were waiting backstage during a moment you are not participating in, please be courteous to the conductor and other performers by not talking. The walls backstage are cinder block, and voices carry much more than you may think. The same rule extends to our hallways and lobby areas. It is important to keep in mind that classes and other events are in session at all times throughout the day in the Forbes Center.
9. Stay with your group and JMU liaison at all times. When you reach the end of your scheduled event and are told you may leave, please meet your caretaker in a designated place predetermined by the event coordinators. Family and Friends are not permitted on stage or backstage at any time. If you are instructed to meet and greet in the lobby you must exit via backstage and walk around to the lobby. You may not pass through the house to get to the lobby.
